BRAVE NEW WORLD

In 1932, Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World was published. As a work of science fiction, it depicted a science-controlled civilization in which human beings were reduced to utilitarian entities. We have to ask today whether the Culture of Death is leading us to that same end. The difference, of course, is that Mr. Huxley was providing us with science fiction, but the world-wide purveyors of the Culture of Death are creating scientific fact:

  • In the Netherlands, patients with an “incurable disease” can request assisted suicide. Children as young as age 12 can make this request with the permission of their parents.

  • In Belgium, where euthanasia is legal, lawmakers have sought and may have passed legislation that would allow a doctor to end the life of a child without parental permission.

  • Elderly patients in the Netherlands are so fearful of their own doctors that they wear bracelets telling doctors that they do not want to die.

  • In the US, it is legal to spirit a child across state lines for an abortion without parental consent.

  • In England, some physicians call seriously disabled patients “bed blockers." Guess what happens to “bed blockers?"

  • In the US, and in other places around the world, newborns are left to die unattended for reasons known only to the presumed caretakers.

As Catholics and decent human beings, we have to work to end the Culture of Death. We cannot maintain neutrality. I urge all reading this essay to pray daily for the victims of abortion: the child, the mother and the father. Inform neighbors and friends about the evils of abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide, embryonic stem cell research, and all of the evils associated with the Culture of Death. Frequently write to your legislators and to the editors of your daily newspapers. Vote only for candidates who support the Culture of Life. Seek to “plant forests of awakened consciences."
