Knights of Columbus sends disaster relief to Peruvian earthquake victims

More than 500 killed and 85,000 displaced

New Haven, CT - The Knights of Columbus announced that it has donated $25,000 in relief assistance to victims of the Aug. 15, 2007 earthquake along the country's Pacific coast.

The 7.9-magnitude earthquake resulted in more than 500 deaths and left some 85,000 people homeless.

The K of C contribution was sent to Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne, the Catholic Archbishop of Lima, to assist the Church's outreach to earthquake victims.

Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said that along with financial aid, the Order conveyed "a pledge of prayer and solidarity with the faithful of Peru as they struggle to recover from the devastating effects of this earthquake."

"In keeping with the Knights of Columbus' first principle of charity, we seek to bring hope and comfort to those who have suffered loss," Anderson continued. "We encourage all men and women of good will to join us in helping the survivors to rebuild their lives."

Knights of Columbus reaffirms opposition to abortion, embryonic stem cell research

Resolution calls for laws to protect rights of conscience for medical personnel

NASHVILLE, TN - Delegates to the 125th annual convention of the Knights of Columbus unanimously adopted a resolution reaffirming its "deep commitment to oppose any governmental action or policy that promotes abortion, embryonic stem cell research, human cloning, euthanasia, assisted suicide and other offenses against life."

The resolution, adopted during the final session of the convention at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, also called for "the adoption of laws that recognize and protect in law the right of conscience for doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other medical personnel, guaranteeing that they may not be forced to provide medical services which violate their religious beliefs." The resolution also called for "similar protection for Catholic hospitals."

The Knights of Columbus also reaffirmed its "long-standing policy of not inviting to any Knights of Columbus event, persons, especially public officials or candidates for public office, who do not support the legal protection of unborn children, or who advocate for the legalization of assisted suicide or euthanasia."

Convention delegates also adopted resolutions expressing "Support for Natural Marriage," "Honoring Our Armed Forces," calling for "Decency in the Media and on the Internet," and calling for "continued use of "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The full texts of the resolutions can be found on the Knights of Columbus website, www.kofc.org.

The convention celebrated the 125th anniversary of the Knights of Columbus, which was founded in New Haven, CT in 1882. Among the highlights of the convention was attendance by Vatican Secretary of State Tarcissio Bertone, who delivered a major address Wednesday evening, and who expressed strong support for the cause for sainthood of the founder of the Knights, Fr. Michael J. McGivney. Cardinal Bertone, the Vatican's number two official, received the Knights of Columbus' highest honor, the Gaudiam et Spes award, on Tuesday evening. Transcripts of his remarks can also be found at www.kofc.org.

A.M. Best affirms Knights of Columbus rating of A++ (Superior)

Order's insurance program gets highest rating for 32nd consecutive year

New Haven, CT - For the 32nd consecutive year, A.M. Best Company has assigned the Knights of Columbus its highest financial strength rating, A++ (Superior). A.M. Best is a worldwide rating and information agency, which conducts in-depth analyses and issues reports about the fiscal stability of insurance companies.

In its 2007 affirmation, A.M. Best cited the Knights of Columbus's "strong fraternal and insurance presence within the Catholic communities in the United States and Canada, its strong risk-adjusted capitalization as measured by Best's Capital Adequacy Ratio and its consistently positive statutory operating results."

The report also pointed to the K of C's "evolving fraternal programs in other countries such as Mexico, Poland the Pacific Rim territories and the Philippines, which could add to new membership growth going forward."

Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson welcomed the A.M. Best report and, reflecting on the Knights of Columbus' 125th anniversary (1882-2007), said that A++ rating "is a result of continued and fervent adherence to our original mission of providing Catholic families with security and stability through top quality life insurance products." During the past decade, the amount K of C insurance in force has doubled to nearly $64 billion.

Grand Knight SK Keith Thibeault (left) and Deputy Grand Knight SK Paul Parisi Jr. marched in full 4th Degree regalia with the council's official banner in Concord's Memorial Day parade on May 28th, 2007.
